This series features a stretch of 12 shophouses that are all in different states; some have been lavishly renovated and are home to expatriates, others are in the process of being refurbished, and one is even a buddhist temple.
After some exploration, I realised I needed to shoot the dwellings from the exact same angle within each house and feature the inside of the façade, which is the only element one is not allowed to change, according to conservation rules.
The result almost looks like it’s the same house shot at different times, but in fact, all the photographs were taken in a span of 3 days.
As these houses are about 80 years old, I realise that the people that live and work in them are mere ‘instances’ in time.
